Let’s talk about a familiar scenario: You pull up to your family photography session, your heart is beating a little fast, and you immediately turn to your kids with a half-pleading, half-warning look. “Now please, I want you to be on your best behavior today. Just smile nicely for the camera when I tell you to, okay?”
If you’ve ever said those words, take a deep breath and know you are in wonderful company. Every single parent feels that pressure. We want everything to look effortless, so we put an immense amount of weight on our little ones to perform, sit still, and flash a camera-ready grin right on command.
Except… kids aren’t built to be mini-statues. And forcing a stiff, wide-eyed “cheese” grin usually results in a look that doesn’t feel like your child at all.
At the Kimberley Asante Photography, we throw that rulebook right out the window. Here is the secret to capturing those magical, genuine portraits you actually crave: We let kids be kids.
Going at the Pace of Your Children
Every child is unique, and no two sessions ever look the exact same. Some kids bounce into the session ready to conquer the world, while others are a little more cautious, quiet, or unsure about this new environment and this photographer they’ve never met before.
And you know what? That is completely okay.
If a child needs a few extra minutes to sit back, explore, cling to mom’s leg, or warm up at their own comfortable pace, we take that time. There is no ticking clock running on your child’s comfort level. When we don’t rush them, their nervous system settles. They realize they are safe, there are no expectations forcing them to “be good,” and they can simply relax into the space.
Why “Say Cheese” Doesn’t Work
If you spend a session repeating “Say cheese! Look at the camera! Give me a big smile!”, you’re essentially asking your child to look at a stranger with a black box and pretend. It creates tension, and kids can smell forced pressure a mile away.
Instead of demanding a smile, I would rather earn a real one.
When you step in front of my lens, you will never hear me say “say cheese.” Instead, I’ll start talking to them about their favorite things, crack a silly joke, invite them to play a game, or just watch how they interact with you. Before they even realize it, they aren’t thinking about a camera anymore—they are laughing, giggling, and reacting authentically.

When Kids Have Fun, Parents Have Fun
Over years of photographing families, especially those with busy, energetic toddlers and younger children, I’ve learned one absolute truth: When the kids are having fun, the parents are having fun, too.
The moment you stop worrying about whether your toddler is sitting perfectly straight and start actually tickling them, playing with them, and soaking up their genuine giggles, the whole energy of the session shifts. The tension melts away. The edge comes off.
Suddenly, your family session isn’t a stressful chore on your calendar—it’s just a fun, relaxed afternoon spent loving on each other. And the best part? Those raw, unforced, messy, joyful moments are the exact photographs that will take your breath away when you see them on your wall or in your custom album.
Let’s Capture Your Family Just As You Are
You don’t need a household of perfectly behaved, robotic children to have incredible family portraits. You just need a space where your kids are allowed to be their wonderful, spirited selves, and where you can let go of the pressure and just enjoy being a mom.
